At night, the station transforms into an illuminated spectacle, where you can soak in the tranquil atmosphere under the starlit sky.

This is a rare and luxurious experience, and it’s waiting for you in Shimane Prefecture, Japan.

In this article, I’ll share everything you need to know about Utsui Station, including how to get there, where to stay, and what to expect—all from the perspective of someone who once lived in a nearby town. By the time you finish reading, I guarantee you’ll want to add this extraordinary spot to your travel bucket list.

So, stay with me until the end—you won’t want to miss this!

What is Utsui Station?

Why is it Called the “Sky Station”?

Utsui Station (うづいえき) is a former JR West San’in Main Line station located in Ohnan Town, Shimane Prefecture. With a platform elevated approximately 20 meters above the ground, it earned the nickname “Sky Station”, captivating railway enthusiasts and travelers alike.

However, Utsui Station is not the only highlight of the San’in Main Line. The railway once featured:

  • A rare pedestrian-accessible railway bridge near the former Kashiwazuchi Station
  • A wooden school building, featured as a filming location in the movie Sand Chronicle (Sunadokei), near the former Kawahara Station

The route was renowned for its breathtaking seasonal landscapes, offering a unique window into Japan’s scenic countryside. Unfortunately, operations ceased on March 31, 2018, and the line was officially abandoned.

Yet, even after its closure, Utsui Station continues to draw attention for its striking architecture and unforgettable atmosphere, making it a must-visit spot for travelers seeking something truly extraordinary.
